Body Found in Park Beneath Colorado Street Bridge; Suicide Suspected

Published on Tuesday, April 27, 2021 | 10:03 am

Suicide was suspected after a man’s body was found in Desiderio Neighborhood Park beneath the Colorado Street Bridge in Pasadena early Tuesday, officials said.

A city employee discovered the body just after 6:15 a.m. on the grounds of the park, 10 N. Arroyo Blvd, directly under the bridge, Pasadena police Lt. Sean Dawkins said.

It appeared the man had jumped from the bridge, but the fall was not witnessed and was not clear what time it occurred, the lieutenant said.

City officials are in the process of gathering public input on three proposed designs for new barriers along the bridge meant to deter suicide.

Prior to the barriers, the city installed chain-link fencing on the bridge in 2017 following an increase in jumpers. On Labor Day weekend of that year, first responders spent 17 hours talking a distraught person down from the ledge of the bridge.

Anyone struggling with suicidal thoughts can reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 24 hours a day in English and Spanish by calling (800) 273-8255.

  • Barriers are just going to ruin a perfectly beautiful and historic bridge. Tragic as it is, people jumping from bridges has been happening as long as there have been bridges. Better to invest the money into public health resources and get to the root of the problem.

  • I agree with Brent. Barriers are just going to make the bridge look ugly and jumpers will find a way to jump.

  • This article notes Pasadena officials have no information when this incident might have occurred, leading me to believe perhaps there is no video surveillance on the bridge. Yesterday I slowly cruised the bridge West to East and did not see any obvious cameras. This morning I carefully reviewed my dashcam footage and again did not notice any cameras. Given the curvature of the bridge it would take perhaps 6 cameras to fully cover the pedestrian path. It would be easy to remotely monitor with motion detection alerts. Perhaps local mental health organizations could create a group of volunteers to do the monitoring to take some burden off the City.

  • When will Pasadena begin to address the suicide problem at this location with compassion and bring attention to the problem? Instead of brushing it under the rug. Why don’t you identify the man? So people know he was a young 20 year old man he was a kid someone’s son. Make the story more human, help Pasadenians to connect to this tragedy.
