U.S. News & World Report today ranked Caltech ninth among the top universities in the nation.

The institute tied with Duke, Johns Hopkins and Northwestern universities.

According to the list, Caltech came in behind Princeton Columbia, Harvard, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Yale, Stanford, the University of Chicago, and the University of Pennsylvania.

For nearly 37 years U.S. News & World Report has ranked the best colleges and universities in the country.

According to Forbes, rankings were based on a wide number of metrics, including class size, the ability to retain and graduate students from different socioeconomic backgrounds, and the average debt levels of graduates.

Aside from the national rankings, U.S. News also ranks schools in a variety of other categories, including best liberal arts colleges, regional schools, and top public schools.
