Caltech Mourns the Passing of Francis H. Clauser

Professor Clausser died March 3, at 99 years of age

Francis H. Clauser (BS ’34, MS ’35, PhD ’37), Caltech’s Clark Blanchard Millikan Professor of Engineering, Emeritus, passed away Sunday, March 3. He was 99 years old.

Clauser was the chair of the Division of Engineering and Applied Science from 1969 to 1974. During his tenure, Clauser created two multidisciplinary programs, the Environmental Engineering Science program, launched in 1969, and the Applied Physics program, in 1970. He oversaw the construction of the Earle M. Jorgensen Laboratory of Information Science, dedicated in 1971, and, in 1973, established the Sherman Fairchild Distinguished Scholars Program.

Upon stepping down as chair he remained the Millikan Professor until his retirement in 1980.
