A young child was injured after a fall near the Eaton Canyon lower waterfalls in Pasadena on Sunday.

The incident serves as a reminder to those planning outdoor summer activities to exercise caution and ensure they are adequately prepared for potential hazards, especially when hiking with children.

According to Pasadena Fire Dept. Deputy Chief of Operations Timothy Sell, the parents of the injured child were able to call the Fire Dept. by cell phone from the wilderness location.

When Truck 32 arrived at the scene, the Urban Search and Rescue units were called off since there was no rescue required, but a medical evaluation was necessary, Sell said.

The child was evaluated on the scene and subsequently transported to LA County USC for further evaluation and treatment.

Sell said there has been a noticeable increase in families hiking to the Eaton Canyon waterfalls recently.

The attraction to the area has been bolstered by the resurgence of flowing water following an extensive period of rainfall.

However, the allure of these outdoor activities also brings risks.

“The danger is slipping on rocks, hence, the need for proper hiking/water shoes, a small first aid kit, a cell phone, and water/snacks if the hike is longer than expected,” Sell explained. “The best defense though is common sense and not being in a rush due to the increased number of hikers and not attempting stunts or dangerous maneuvers.”
