The City Council has approved an agreement allowing an additional soccer match to be held at the Rose Bowl stadium in either September or October this year.
The agreement with Prime Sports and Entertainment was approved unanimously along with other items on the consent calendar at the last meeting on Monday, June 5.
The soccer match would be the 25th ‘displacement event’ in 2023.
A displacement event refers to any event with an expected attendance of 20,000 people or more. According to the Arroyo Seco Public Lands Ordinance, only 15 displacement events may be held every year without Council approval.
The Ordinance attempts to achieve a balance between the use of the facilities and the impact of such use on surrounding residential areas.
Additional displacement events can be requested but need approval from the City Council.
The 24 displacement events for 2023 are: six scheduled UCLA football games, the Rose Bowl Game, ten Music Festival dates, four concerts with Live Nation, and three soccer matches with Soccer United Marketing and AEG.
According to the Rose Bowl Operating Company (RBOC) the additional events will not create undue conflicts with the Arroyo Seco activities taking place at the same time and will not impose undue adverse impacts on the surrounding residential areas.
It is anticipated that more or less 50,000 people will attend the soccer match.
As per RBOC’s report, the event will generate in excess of $300,000. RBOC said this additional revenue will help fund their operating budget and unfunded capital projects.
