City Surveying Residents on Police Oversight

The City of Pasadena wants to know your thoughts on police oversight.

On Monday, the city asked local residents to complete a survey on the topic.

“We are seeking the input of Pasadena residents, advocacy groups and others with constructive viewpoints on whether there needs to be an additional civilian review body, such as a Community Police Oversight Commission, established to provide greater oversight or review of law enforcement in Pasadena,” the survey reads. “If so, we are seeking input on the nature of oversight that you would like to see provided,” the survey reads.

The survey asks residents to “share their thoughts and opinions on police oversight in the city of Pasadena. Civilian oversight is presently provided by the City Manager, the City Council and its Public Safety Committee,” the survey reads. “Does there need to be additional civilian oversight of the Pasadena Police Department? If so, please share your ideas and concerns.”

Elected officials on the City Council and the Public Safety Committee, like many other communities, are contemplating more local accountability of police after protests in the wake of the officer involved death of George Floyd.

City staff is currently studying oversight models and will report back to the City Council’s Public Safety Committee chaired by Councilman John Kennedy.

Respondents are not required to leave their name, email address and phone numbers.

“While the day to day job of the police department is for sworn and trained law enforcement personnel, the police department is ultimately accountable to civilian control. In Pasadena, the Chief of Police reports to the City Manager,” a city statement reads. “In turn, the Public Safety Committee of the City Council provides general review and the City Council is the ultimate policy making body for the Police and all city departments. The City Manager, the members of the Public Safety Committee and the City Council are all non-police civilians.”
