Council Approves Contract for City Library Security Enhancements

The City Council on Monday voted to approve a $234,300 contract for security enhancements at local library facilities.

The money will be used to improve safety at libraries at La Pintoresca Park and the Villa Parke Community Center.

“The city owns and maintains critical assets across many facilities that need to be protected and secured,” according to a city staff report. “Security at these facilities is also paramount for employee safety. Over the years, facility security and access have been minimally updated without standardization and has limited the city’s ability to take advantage of advancements in building security technology.”

In 2016, an Enterprise Building Security Management (BSM) Capital Improvement Program (CIP) project was created to provide a citywide standard for facility access control and video surveillance.

The project was fully funded as part of the FY 2020 Adopted ClP budget and is currently managed by the Department of Information Technology (DoIT). Under the BSM project, there are presently 13 locations scheduled to have access controls and/or video surveillance installed.

“The objective of the project is to secure city assets and resources, safeguard against loss, improve facilities’ access management controls, limit public access to staff areas, and improve incident response time,” states the report.

The project is being completed in three phases. Phase one included City Hall and the Pasadena Police Station. The City Council approved a contract for Phase 1 locations in 2019.

Work is ongoing at City Hall.

Phase 2 includes the work at libraries at La Pintoresca Park and the Villa Parke Community Center, which the council approved on Monday.

Phase 3 will include enhancements at the city’s other branch libraries, including the Central Library on Walnut Street.
