COVID-19 Surge Brings 61 New Infections, 1 New Death to Pasadena

City Health Officials Issue Holiday Guidelines

The statewide COVID-19 surge could be seen in Pasadena Tuesday, where city officials reported 61 new infections and one new death, bringing an end to more than five straight weeks without a fatality.

The city has recorded a total of 3,160 cases of the virus and 130 deaths.

Seven of the new cases and the new fatality involved nursing home patients, city spokeswoman Lisa Derderian said. The person who recently succumbed to the virus was described as a man in his late-70s.

“This is the highest number of cases we’ve received since mid mid-May,” she said.

According to city records, Tuesday saw the second-highest number of detected infections in a single day, topped only by May 20, when 80 cases were reported.

Huntington Hospital reported treating 35 COVID-19 patients.

The Pasadena Public Health Department issued a set of guidelines to help residents maintain proper social distancing during the holiday season.

“Gatherings of 3 or fewer households are permitted if they are held outdoors,”according to a PPH statement. “The fewer people you and your household have in-person contact with, the lower your risk of getting COVID-19.”

“You and your household are allowed to gather with one or two other households as long as the gathering is outside, lasts no more than two hours, and everyone wears face coverings and stays at least 6 feet from non-household members,” the statement continued. “If you do choose to take this risk, it is safer to mix with the same one to two household(s) repeatedly rather than with different groups

Travel is discouraged, health officials said. And those who do travel out of the area are urged to self-isolate for 14 days upon their return.

Permitted activities under public health guidelines include online parties, car parades in compliance with social distancing standards, drive-in movies or concerts, visiting outdoor art exhibitions and decorating homes, according to city health officials.

Large gatherings of any kind, carnivals, festivals are prohibited, as well as store displays or photo opportunities that do not allow for 6 feet of social distance between people. Caroling is not permitted in public or commercial settings.

Any activity involving going door-to-door was not recommended, officials added.

At the regional level, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported 2,301 new infections and 25 new deaths, raising the overall tallies to 344,523 cases of COVID-19 and 7,299 deaths.

Officials reported 1.126 hospitalized COVID-19 patients on Tuesday, with 27% of them being treated in intensive care units.

“The County has not experienced the number of daily COVID-19 hospitalizations over 1,100 since late-August,” the L.A. County Department of Public Health said in a written statement. “This is more than a 40% increase from two week ago when daily

“As COVID-19 transmission and hospitalizations accelerate, we are at a time where immediate action is needed to change our current trajectory. Working with the Board of Supervisors, we will modify requirements to enhance safeguards and slow the spread of COVID-19.”

The California Department of Public Health announced 8,743 new COVID-19 infections and 36 new deaths on Tuesday, raising the statewide totals to 1,037,978 infections and 18,299 fatalities.

The average positivity rate over the prior week had climbed to 5.2%, while the 14-day average was recorded at 4.7%, according to a CDPH statement.

As of Tuesday, Los Angeles County accounted for 33% of California’s COVID-19 infections and 40% of the state’s deaths.
