Demand for PCC Extended Spring Classes Runs High

Published on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 | 5:15 pm

The Pasadena City College Extended Spring class offerings were in high demand on Monday as thousands of PCC continuing students rushed to take advantage of the late-start classes. As of the afternoon of Tuesday, April 9, students have filled more than 60 percent of the 13,500 class seats available. There are still many section offerings available to help continuing students transfer in the fall of 2013 or finish their general education requirements. The sections and can be accessed by going to http://lancerlink.pasadena.edu/.

“The response to Extended Spring by our students has been outstanding,” said Dr. Ofelia Arellano, PCC dean of Academic Affairs. “The reason these classes are in such high demand is that the deans, faculty, and administration worked collaboratively to offer the classes students needed the most.”

As the name implies, Extended Spring is an addition to the spring term that began in January. More than 460 class sections, compared to only 271 sections in winter of 2012, have been added to help students complete their degrees or transfer to a four-year institution. PCC Extended Spring course grades will be recorded on all spring transcripts and will meet the needs of students who submitted applications to the University of California and California State University and still need to complete a requirement for fall admission.

Students who need a class that is full or not offered in Extended Spring to transfer to a four-year university in the fall of 2013 should contact PCC Counseling at complete@pasadena.edu. Students will also have an opportunity to take classes at PCC during the college’s summer term that begins on June 24.

Due to the overwhelming popularity of these classes, PCC’s current online registration system reached maximum capacity early Monday morning. Even with efforts by the PCC Information Technology System team to double the normal amount of students that can access the registration system, demand outpaced capacity and students experienced delays in registration. Students were encouraged to check the PCC Facebook (www.facebook.com/pasadenacitycollege) page and the PCC website for ongoing updates. The registration system has been working today with out incident.

“There has been an incredible response from students wanting to take advantage of the addition of PCC’s Extended Spring,” said Dr. Robert Bell, PCC senior vice president and assistant superintendent for Academic and Student Affairs. “While we are happy to see such enthusiasm, it has caused the school’s registration system to reach maximum capacity.”

PCC’s Extended Spring will be the last time that the college will be operating under the antiquated Santa Rosa registration system. Starting with the summer term 2013, the college will be implementing LancerPoint – PCC’s new administrative information system that updates and improves the college’s 25-year old legacy system. It integrates college business processes into a single point of access for students, staff, and faculty, including student records, registration, and financial aid.

PCC looks forward to a more integrated, powerful and user-friendly system to help achieve its educational goals.
