On Friday, March 28, Diana Peterson-More spoke at the monthly Business Growth Workshop at the University Club of Pasadena. Entitled The Unusual Subjects, Diana Peterson-More’s presentation focused on how businesses should employ panel interviews when hiring to find the best candidate while ensuring safety in regards to liability issues. The essence of such a panel interview should be skill & competency based hiring.

What is skill & competency based hiring? Diana Peterson-More described how hiring should be based on acts & facts and not on nebulous hypotheticals. She clearly told the gathered Pasadena business leaders at the University Club that when it comes to a job candidate, “Their past performance is the best indicator of their future performance.”

The Business Growth Workshop series at the University Club of Pasadena is organized by James Harwood of Total HR Management and Ken Keller of STAR Business Consulting. As an expert in Recruitment and Selection through his human resources outsourcing work, James Harwood asked Diana Peterson-More a relevant question in regards to skill & competency based hiring.

James Harwood probed the idea of acts & facts when he inquired, “Beyond skills and basic competencies, how does this hiring approach address questions of personality? How would an interview panel also assess a candidate’s personality to make sure they’ll be a good fit in the company culture of a particular business?”

With a winning smile, Diana Peterson-More answered this query when she replied, “You can take something that’s seemingly subjective and make it objective. You can ask them questions about their past, ‘Can you describe the best work environment you ever experienced?’ or ‘Can you describe the worst work environment you ever experienced?’ Such questions should reveal whether or not they’ll fit into a specific environment.”

As an ongoing asset for the Pasadena business community, the Business Growth Workshops continue to demonstrate the value of the University Club as a long-lasting institution. What was fascinating was to see how the tables in the conference room were rearranged this time around to allow for the growing number of attendees. Evidently, with an impressive list of business leaders and innovators scheduled for the rest of the year, the Business Growth Workshops at the University Club will continue to be a true asset for Pasadena for the rest of 2014.
