Equity and Diversity at Center of Aveson Charter Schools’ Board Expansions

Aveson Charter Schools announced on Tuesday that the board of directors of the Equity and Diversity Center has been expanded from five to eight members. 

The newly expanded board reflects the school’s larger initiative to more fully represent the diversity of the communities Aveson serves, according to a statement on the expansion. 

It also supports the transformative work Aveson leadership, staff and families are currently engaged in becoming an anti-racist learning community.

“As a free public charter school, Aveson must be committed to equity and diversity at every level, including at the board,” said Aveson Board President Elsie Rivas Gómez in a statement. “We are committed to being an intentionally integrated school where every student can feel centered and empowered.”

According to Rivas Gómez, students, teachers, staff and families will continue to collaborate to ensure that Black families and families of color in the greater Pasadena-Altadena community can entrust their children to Aveson classrooms as every student in the community deserves the kind of personalized and empowering education that Aveson Charter Schools offer.

“Our staff members are leaning into the tough conversations and critical analysis around our practices and procedures to alter the social fabric of our organization,”  said Eva Neuer, Aveson executive director. “Together with the Aveson board, we are committed to integrating diverse perspectives and evolving into a truly inclusive organization.”
