On Wednesday, Feb. 15, Pasadena Village, a nonprofit that helps aging-in-place older adults connect with each other, will celebrate the second annual National Villages Day with an Older Adult Resource Fair.

The event is an opportunity for residents of Pasadena Village, as well as the public, to learn about the local nonprofits and businesses that offer services, resources and support to older adults.

These services can help older adults remain independent and stay in their own homes for as long as possible.

This event is free, open to the public, and will be held at the historic craftsman-style Sierra Madre Woman’s Club at 550 W Sierra Madre Blvd. from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

The Resource Fair will be a chance for the public to find out what is available in the local area to help them in their later years.

Citing an American Association of Retired Persons survey, Katie Brandon, Executive Director of Pasadena Village said nearly 90 percent of adults over 65 want to remain in their current homes as they grow older.

Brandon said it is important for older adults who live independently to get connected with the community and have the resources they need to live vibrant lives.

“You need the social connections and the connections to your community in order to thrive as you age in place in our community. And so not only will there be resources to help you with financial planning and your health, but also nonprofit organizations to engage the culture of our community to volunteer and other things to do as you are living in your own home.”

According to Brandon, 40 local businesses and nonprofits are joining the fair.

Resource fair participants include 1Heart Caregiver Services-Pasadena, Always Best Care Pasadena, Alzheimer’s Association-California Southland Chapter, Cancer Support Community of the Greater San Gabriel Valley, ChapCare and more.

New partners joining the fair include DispatchHealth, which provides medical care at their patients’ home.

“Instead of going to the emergency room, places like Dispatch Health will come to you which is so fantastic, especially for those who might have mobility or health issues,” said Brandon.

Recognizing that older adults experience issues with their mental health, Pasadena Village is also partnering with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health for this year’s fair.

“We know that isolation and loneliness is a huge factor in affecting our mental health, everyone’s mental health,” said Brandon. So we’re really excited. There’s a lot of new resources, even some interesting ones like organizing your photographs to prepare them for, to share with your family. So interesting ones and really useful ones.”

Brandon believes the resource fair is a critical part of connecting older adults with the resources in the community.

“Pasadena and the surrounding area are rich with opportunities to connect with those who specialize in working with our older adult population. And so to tap into them and to just know that they’re available, I think is so critical because to remain independent, you need to have a sense, you need to have choices, and you need to have options.”

“And to have a familiar face of someone you’ve met, a contact at a company you know, gives you peace of mind as you age in place.”

Congresswoman Judy Chu, Sierra Madre Senior Community Commissioner Anita Thompson, and other dignitaries will attend the upcoming fair to give brief remarks.

“Elizabeth Taylor” portrayed by Kayla Boye and “Princess Di” portrayed by Charlotte Munson will also share about their upcoming shows at the Sierra Madre Playhouse.

“We definitely welcome everyone, especially those who are caring for loved ones who might need to have these resources in their back pocket in case situations do change as we age,” said Brandon.
