Fair Warning! The City is About to Start Writing Parking Tickets Again

Council takes no action on overnight parking and street sweeping enforcement

Things really are getting back to normal.

The city is set to start issuing warnings on some parking violations today, and tickets will be written next week.

At Monday’s meeting, the Pasadena City Council voted to lift modifications to the city’s parking policies enacted shortly after the city took action during the pandemic.

According to that action, enforcement at parking meters resumes today. Motorists will receive warnings for one week, until June 16 when citations resume.

Enforcement of parking time limits in residential neighborhoods will also follow that schedule.

Vehicle booting and impounds for non-critical purposes to resume August 1.

Council deferred action on overnight parking enforcement and enforcement of street sweeping restrictions to resume.

A city staff report points to the easing of restrictions on local businesses as one of the reasons for the return to enforcement.

“Recent changes in policy at the State, County, and Local levels have allowed for retail stores and office spaces to reopen with some restrictions,” a city staff report reads. “With the expectation that restaurants will be allowed to reopen for sit-down dining in short order, the Department of Transportation has determined a return to pre-COVID-19 efforts is warranted.”

After City Manager Steve Mermell declared a local health emergency in March shortly after the start of the pandemic,

the City Council approved a staff recommendation to modify various parking policies, including suspension of enforcement of the overnight parking ordinance, time limits in residential neighborhoods, daytime street sweeping restrictions, payment at all curbside parking spaces, non-critical vehicle impounds and booting and impounding vehicles for five or more past-due parking citations and for vehicles with expired registrations.
