Family members, friends, colleagues and former student athletes are mourning the death of longtime La Cañada High School Athletic Director and Pasadena Quarterbacks Club Treasurer Randall “Randy” Boal, who died last week. He was 76.

Boal died Dec. 27, according to his wife, Marsha Boal. Randy Boal is also survived by a son, Erik.

He spent 35 years working at La Cañada High School, the last 14 of them as athletic director, prior to his retirement in 2007.

He also served as treasurer of the nonprofit Pasadena Quarterbacks Club. Before joining the high school staff, he began his coaching career with Pop Warner.

Boal also held the distinction of having attended 68 Rose Bowl games in a row, his wife said.

“He loved kids all the way from Pop Warner age to high school students. And he would do anything for them, and he’d go to battle for them,” she said. “That was his passion in life: Making things better for young people.

“After he retired, we traveled quite extensively, and we would — before we were going to a town or a city — if there was somebody there that was a former student of his, we would definitely look them up. His feelings for them never changed. He was always there for them,” Marsha Boal said.

“All the students just loved him,” she said. “And that has been reemphasized this last week, when I’ve been getting phone calls from students that live in Alaska, North Carolina, South Carolina, Michigan. They’re calling and sending notes.”

Randy Boal spent his life in the San Gabriel Valley, Marsha Boal said. He attended La Cañada Junior High School, then Muir High School in Pasadena before earning his degree at UC Santa Barbara.

“He went to work and went to school part-time, working on his masters,” she said. “We dated for about four years and we got married in 1967.”

Marsha Boal said her husband taught her how to drive a car and “how to grow up.”

“He was a very nice gentleman. He took wonderful care of me,” she said.

Colleagues also expressed sorrow and condolences.

“He was a very good friend of mine and we’ve been in the Quarterbacks Club together for many, many years,” club Marketing Director Joan De Souza said. “It’s a huge loss, not only to the club but just to all of us as individuals. He was a dear friend and we’re going to miss him.”

Former Pasadena Quarterbacks Club President Jim Grouettners said Randy Boal was his “right arm.”

“He is a huge loss to the organization,” he said. “Randy helped make it all work and make it enjoyable.”
