No more free rides.

Riders using Pasadena Transit must again pay fares beginning April 12.

During the pandemic, the city kept its public transit services available for essential trips by implementing a number of operational procedures, policies and schedule modifications in order to keep customers and drivers safe.

In order to keep drivers safe, customers were required to board buses at the back door away from drivers.

Because fare collection occurs at the front door, fares were suspended, but now driver barriers have since been installed, thus enabling front door boarding and fare collection to resume.

Other measures put in place to protect riders and operators have included disinfecting high-touch surfaces on buses frequently throughout the day, enhanced nightly disinfecting of every bus surface from floor to ceiling, blocked off select seating on buses to encourage social distancing, requiring facial coverings, providing single-use masks on buses for riders, hand sanitizing dispensers on every bus, limiting bus capacity, and a temporary increase in service frequencies on the higher demand routes.

“Since March 2020, Pasadena Transit implemented several schedule changes in an effort to deploy as many buses as possible to optimize space for social distancing and ensure continued transit services for essential trips,” according to a memo by city Transportation Director Laura Rubio-Cornejo.

“In an effort to help facilitate social distancing on buses and protect passengers and bus operators, temporary service reallocations were implemented in order to increase the number of buses on the most heavily used routes,” Rubio-Cornejo wrote.

According to the memo, ridership demand has increased since the economy and other activities gradually began reopening, However, measures will remain in place to provide safe conditions.
