Few Clues in Tragic Case of Baby Girl Found Dead in Memorial Park Restroom

Pasadena police detectives have little to go on as of yet in the case of a newborn baby girl whose body was found by janitors in the stall of a women’s restroom in Memorial Park last Thursday night.

First-responders were shaken by the tragic scene, city spokesperson Lisa Derderian said.

When police and paramedics arrived, they found the baby lying on toilet paper, though a police lieutenant was hesitant to say it had been fashioned into a bed.

Pasadena police Lt. Jesse Carrillo said Monday that the Coroner’s office has determined the baby was born full-term, not stillborn. However, the Coroner has not determined a cause of death or the race of the infant, he said.

Carrillo said police do not know from the evidence if the child was actually given birth in the restroom or elsewhere and brought there. Officers searched nearby areas, including the Metro station, in an attempt to find the birthing location, but came up empty.

Investigators have obtained video from the Pasadena Senior Center which may reveal images of the baby’s mother entering the restroom if she passed near the cameras, he said.

Detectives continue to search for the baby’s mother and are in contact with medical facilities to determine if a woman in need of postpartum medical aid who could be that mother has come in for treatment.

Meanwhile, a neighbor who lives in a nearby apartment complex is calling for a memorial service for the little girl, whom the neighbor calls “Angel.”

Carrillo said the death was all the more tragic because there are “no questions asked” options for a parent to surrender a baby, safely.

A “Safe Haven” surrender is when a parent (or other person having lawful custody of a minor 72 hours old or younger) voluntarily surrenders physical custody to any firefighter on duty at a Pasadena fire station.

Under certain circumstances, they may do so discreetly without fear of being prosecuted for child abandonment. The firefighters assess the infant for any immediate medical needs and then transport the infant to a local hospital.

Pasadena Police are urging anyone with information to call them at (626) 744-4241.
