Former Sheraton Pasadena Hotel Officially Transitions into Completely New Hotel Dena

The former Sheraton Pasadena Hotel has transitioned into a completely new hotel with new owners, modern fixtures and updated interiors that give emphasis to performing arts called the Hotel Dena.

Fresh new looks evoke “the Industry” with symbolism that evokes Hollywood. A  vintage 1949 Rolls Royce greets travelers out front. There’s even a sound wave installation of a Van Halen guitar riff by artist Ian Schuler.

New management, headed by General Manager Marlon Gonzalez,  is still working on the last remaining finishing touches before making the official announcement this August.

The new Mariott-owned hotel’s management did not close the doors to guests during transitionary and ongoing renovations.

Adjacent to the Pasadena Convention Center, the new Hotel Dena is envisioned to be a new central hub for the performing arts in Southern California; the “ultimate artists’ retreat” in the heart of Pasadena, according to its website.

Murals created by several California-based artists including Lea Tumerman and WRDSMTH can be found throughout the hotel building. Soundwave artworks by artist Erin Harris are also installed at the new hotel.

Hotel Dena features a retro-inspired screening room, and evening performances by local musicians, poets, and comedians.

The new hotel also features “Lyric,” a breakfast spot which brings together local dishes, poetry and music.

The hotel’s “Agents Only” Bar & Lounge, which will also feature live performances, comes to life every afternoon.

Other amenities at Hotel Dena include 311 Guestrooms, an outdoor heated pool and poolside cabanas, 24-hour fitness center, a ballroom and more.

The 5-story hotel was built in 1975 and was last renovated in 2019.

It is unclear when the renovations under the new management started but the transition became official last July 19.

Operators of the former hotel at the site faced a lawsuit for failing to turn over about $850,000  in transient occupancy tax receipts and tourism business improvement district monies to the City in 2019 and 2020.

After years of legal wrangling, Pasadena ended up collecting $867,000, including payment for unpaid principal, interest and penalties.

The hotel’s address is 303 Cordova St., Pasadena.  For more information, see  https://hoteldena.com.
