Thirty-five individuals received services and 19 were placed into motel rooms during the first distribution of the Friends in Deed of the season.

This program began in the first full week of January and will run through March 30th.

“We are grateful to continue serving our unhoused neighbors through the winter months for the 35th year,” said Rabbi Joshua Levine Grater, executive director of Friends In Deed.

Friends In Deed provides winter support to individuals experiencing homelessness during inclement weather in the cold months.

The organization conducts their Bad Weather Supplies program to register clients in the system for long-term services and to offer warm clothing, socks, shoes, umbrellas, sleeping bags, and other necessities for the cold weather.

In addition to holding regular supplies distribution on Thursday nights, there are a limited number of motel rooms available for the most vulnerable on weather-activated evenings. Clients visit First United Methodist Church (500 E. Colorado, Pasadena 91101) on Thursday nights between 5 – 7pm. In addition to the distribution of warm clothing and winter supplies, the Azusa Pacific University nursing program students are on-hand to provide health outreach and skin care.

On any day of the week, when the weather is forecast to be colder than 40 degrees or more than 40% chance of rain, Friends In Deed offers a limited number of motel room stays for the most vulnerable members of the community, including the elderly, women, immuno-compromised, and those with mobility issues.
The distribution and motel room stays are made possible because of the support of First United Methodist Church, the City of Pasadena, local motel partners, Dial-a-Ride, as well as our wonderful board, staff, and volunteers.”

Every day, members of the community can call (888) 915-8111 for automated information and to find out whether this program is activated for the night.

“Our team is excited to serve our community again this season,” says Lindsey Reed, Director of the Bad Weather Supplies program. “For anyone looking to get involved, we encourage cold weather supply donations for our weekly distribution.”

Like many nonprofits, Friends In Deed depends entirely on philanthropy through development, grants, and fundraising efforts to do its work in the community.
