Friends In Deed Resumes Operation of Bad Weather Shelter After Three-Year Hiatus, Offers Refuge for Pasadena’s Homeless Amid Cold Season

Friends In Deed, a Pasadena nonprofit, announced it will reopen its annual Bad Weather Shelter on Jan. 15, 2024, after a three-year hiatus due to COVID-19.

The organization said in anticipation of the cold weather this week, they will also provide temporary motel accommodations for a limited number of individuals experiencing homelessness.

“With generous funding from the City of Pasadena, and thanks to our new partnership with Trinity Lutheran Church, we have a new location that can accommodate up to 50 individuals on cold or rainy nights,” Rabbi Joshua Levine Grater, Executive Director of Friends In Deed, said. “Our most vulnerable neighbors are in need of our compassion and support even more during this difficult time of year, and we look forward to working with our staff, the church, and all of the volunteers that help make this shelter run.”

Starting Jan. 15, Pasadena’s homeless can visit Trinity Lutheran Church, at 997 E. Walnut Street, on weather-activated nights for enrollment between 6 and 9 p.m. The shelter will operate on nights when the weather is forecast to be 40 degrees or below, or when there is more than a 40% chance of rain or wind.

The shelter will also provide a hot meal, a cot to sleep on, restrooms, and additional access to case management and other services as needed.

Community members can call (888) 915-8111 at any time to find out if the shelter is activated.

For more information about the shelter or to volunteer, contact Laura Van Alstine, Director of the Bad Weather Shelter, at laurav@friendsindeedpas.org.

Friends In Deed relies entirely on philanthropy through development, grants, and fundraising efforts to do its work in the community. More fortunate residents in Pasadena can help by volunteering their time or making a donation to support the organization’s efforts.
