From Kind Words to Care Packages, Pasadena Police Officers Feel the Love from the Community

With turbulent times emerging from national tragedies sparked by events like the recent attacks on Dallas and Baton Rouge police officers, some citizens of Pasadena have been going out of their way to both show and tell officers that their work is appreciated and that the community stands behind them by donating plentiful care packages as a token of appreciation.

“The officers have reported that there’s a lot of people going out of their way to say thank you. You don’t get that off-the-cusp stuff very often,” said Lieutenant Pete Hettema. “The community is projecting a balance that’s comforting.”

Citizens have been generously donating packages filled with delicious food, drinks and thank you cards for police officers in the wake of the deadly shootings that took several lives of dedicated officers across state lines.

“It makes us feel really appreciated. It let us know that the community supports us,” said Pasadena Police Officer Conrad Austin.

Care package items include breakfast burritos, various snacks, cake, Gatorade, and much more to keep the officers happy and healthy during around the clock, demanding shifts.

“There’s a lot of things that really support the officers throughout their shift regardless of what shift they’re on,” said Lieutenant Tracey Ibarra.

This physical display of appreciation doesn’t stop there. Kind words of admiration have flooded the streets in more ways than one.

“The Pasadena Police Department has received countless positive phone calls, text messages and emails expressing gratitude and support,” according to Pasadena Police Chief Phillip Sanchez.

Officers Conrad Austin and Barry Glockson have noticed a large increase of citizens approaching them out in the field on a regular basis to simply say “thank you” in just the past couple weeks since tragedy took place across the nation.

“Every call we go on citizens approach us,” said Austin.

Officer Glockson recalled being approached just the other day by an elderly man who extended words of appreciation as well as a young girl all in just a matter of a couple hours.

“It really hits home with us,” said Glockson who recalled the instance the young girl thanked him for protecting her family and presented him with a note. “I put it on my refrigerator. I think it’s awesome.”

The highly evident increase of support from citizens is a reminder of the type of relationship that the Pasadena Police Department works hard to cultivate.

“In a recent community survey we rated about a seventy-eight percent approval rating, which suggests that there is still some work to do — there’s no doubt about that — but I think the vast majority of Pasadenans support its police officers and recognize the difficult job our first responders do every day,” said Pasadena Police Chief Phillip Sanchez in a televised interview with KABC-TV Eyewitness News.

The outpouring of community support is a morale booster for the men and women who risk it all to keep Pasadena a safe place to live.

“It makes us want to work harder,” said Austin.
