Groundbreaking Wednesday Marks Next Phase in Makeover of 101-Year-Old La Loma Bridge

A groundbreaking event Wednesday afternoon will mark the next phase in the planned 17-month renovation of 101-year old La Loma Bridge, expected to have a dramatic impact on the accessibility on many West Pasadena neighborhoods.

Work on the iconic bridge which crosses the Arroyo Seco will involve replacement and widening of the bridge deck by one foot on each side to meet federal design standards, rehabilitation of arches and spandrel columns to restore the overall appearance of the bridge, strengthening of the end piers, and putting up historic decorative railing and streetlights.

La Loma Bridge was structurally analyzed for seismic adequacy in 2000, and was found inadequate to withstand the effects of a major earthquake.

The City has yet to announce a closure date for the bridge, although it has been mentioned a few times that it should begin in late July. Utility relocations started in June.

During the renovation work, traffic will be detoured to other bridges across the Arroyo Seco.

Residents will be able to cross using the Colorado Boulevard Bridge to access areas north of La Loma Bridge, and the San Rafael Bridge to access areas south of La Loma.

The Department of Public Works has posted a generic rerouting map on its website (click here) and is implementing a clear traffic management plan with Pasadena traffic authorities to assist the flow of traffic. Information on Arroyo Seco trail access will also be available on the site.

Expected construction hours are from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily once it starts.

The project, a major initiative of the California Department of Transportation (CalTrans), costs an estimated $16 million. Funding consists of $13.3 million in federal funds and $2.7 million in city funds.

Built in 1914, the La Loma Bridge earned a place in the National Register of Historic Places on July 14, 2004.

Yesenia Alvarado, Public Information at the Pasadena Public Works Department, can be reached at (626) 744-7033 for more information about the renovation project and traffic closure plans.

The groundbreaking ceremonies, open to the public, will start promptly at 3:15 p.m. Parking will be available on the east side of La Loma Bridge.
