Guinness World Records is confirming groundbreaking records were set by the Perseverance mission and its historic landing and its historic landing on Mars.
According to guinnessworldrecords.com, Perseverance set the world record as the largest planetary exploration rover, built for NASA by Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena.
Perseverance was built using the same design as the Curiosity but includes additional scientific equipment, an experimental helicopter, and mechanical upgrades.
It’s mass of 1,026.4 kg (2,262.8 lb.) makes it the heaviest payload soft-landed on Mars.
Perseverance’s mission is to “seek signs of ancient life and collect mineral samples for possible return to Earth.”
NASA believes that Jezero Crater, where the Rover landed, was once home to an ancient lake, is the best place on the planet to find signs of this life.
Perseverance will also collect important data about Mars geology and climate.”
Perseverance also broke another record by employing the strongest supersonic parachute.
The SR03 parachute was built by Airborne Systems specifically for this mission. The parachute withstood a peak load of 67,336 pounds of force at speeds reaching Mach 1.85 during atmospheric testing.
The Ingenuity Mars, a ride-along helicopter on Perseverance developed by NASA and JPL, set a new record for the first aircraft on Mars, according to guinnessworldrecords.com.
Ingenuity is scheduled to fly on Mars as part of the Perseverance rover mission.
