Police are hunting for a man who opened fire on an apartment occupied by a woman and seven children in Pasadena early Tuesday, injuring one child who was struck by flying glass and another who was hurt while diving for cover, police said.

The attack, which was being investigated as a case of attempted murder, unfolded just after midnight at an apartment building at Lincoln and Carlton avenues, Pasadena police Lt. Pete Hettema said.

A shooter described only as male and wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt was seen standing in the courtyard and firing an estimated seven shots into a single apartment unit, the lieutenant said.

A 62-year-old woman was inside the apartment, along with seven children between the ages of 3 and 9.

At least one bullet shattered a window, Hettema said. One of the children was struck and injured by flying glass.

Another child suffered a minor injury while diving for cover, he said. No one was struck directly by gunfire.

A vehicle was heard speeding away from the scene following the gunfire, but a description was not available.

Officers canvassed the area, but the gunman was not found.

A motive for the attack was not available.
