Guy Weston Embree, a lifelong resident of Pasadena and a proud World War II Navy veteran, passed away on January 13th at the age of 100. As the Chief Operating Officer of Embree Buses, Inc., a family business founded by his parents, Guy L. and Lula Embree, Weston was fully committed to providing excellent bus transportation services to the Pasadena School District, church groups, and charter tours.
Weston was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate from the University of California at Berkeley with a degree in Engineering. During his time in the Navy, he was part of the young engineering team that pioneered the precursor of the modern airplane flight recorder. After his military service, he dedicated his life to his family and the Embree Buses, Inc.
Weston was a life-long member of Holliston United Methodist Church in Pasadena where he was baptized, married, and served the congregation by championing the preservation of its historic buildings’ architectural and functional details, including the maintenance of its magnificent pipe organ. On his 100th birthday, family and friends honored him with a professionally performed concert on the historic organ.
In addition to his contributions to the church and the family business, Weston was also a life member of the Society of Automotive Engineers and the Pasadena Kiwanis Club. He supported the Tournament of Roses through Embree Buses, by ensuring the timely transportation of marching bands, football teams, supporters, and dignitaries who were visiting Pasadena for the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game.
Weston was an exceptionally loving father and husband, who, with his wife of 65 years, Shirlee, dedicated their time and energy for the benefit of others. He is survived by his three children, Marilee McElvain (Tom), Anita Stadler (Dan), and Ryan Embree, as well as many nieces and nephews who will miss him deeply.
A service honoring Weston’s life will be held at Mountain View Mortuary Sunrise Chapel in Altadena at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the California-Pacific United Methodist Foundation. at www.cpumf.org
Guy Weston Embree will be remembered for his commitment to his family, his country, and his community, and for the impact he had on so many lives.
