Hadjian Endorses York

With less then two weeks to go before the run off election that will decide the next representative for District 7 on the City Council, former candidate Ciran Hadjian has come out in support of former Los Angeles County Police Chief Margaret York.

York came in second to planning expert Terry Tornek in last months followed by Hadjian who came in a distant third.

Hadjian emphasized bringing new energy for our neighborhoods to City Hall, and supports York because she believes it is time for change.

“Margaret York brings fresh new ideas and experience. Her executive skills as a Police Chief and her many years of community support and involvement make her an excellent candidate. I also believe it would be wonderful to have a woman who is a mother and a grandmother on the council. She will bring a very unique perspective,” Hadjian said.

The endorsement is a major coup for York, who trailed former planning director Terry Tornek by 375 votes after the March 10 election, but whether or not it will pay off is another issue altogether. The number of voters that turn out for run off elections is usually lower than voter turnout in primary contests, which means York will still have to work hard to get Hadjian’s supporters to the polls.

Less than 2,000 people voted in the primary election, despite 10,807 registered voters in District 7, where the main issues are traffic congestion and the South Lake Avenue Business District.

Some voters say they would support the underground tunnel extension of the 710 freeway. The economy is also a major concern to many in District 7. The recession has hit South Lake Avenue hard and left several shops vacant.

District 7 is probably best known for its institutions including PCC and Caltech.

Tornek almost pulled out a victory in the crowded field of five in the March 10 election. The former Pasadena Planning Commissioner picked up 899 votes, 47.2 percent of the vote, which put him close to the 50 percent plus one vote needed to secure the seat which is being vacated by longtime councilman Sid Tyler.

Voters will go back to the polls on April 21.

“I am very proud to have the support of Ciran Hadjian. She is a bright and accomplished woman and she desires the best for Pasadena. I hope that those who supported Ciran will now support my candidacy. We share the same ideals for Pasadena, that it remain a world class city of thriving business, entertainment and educational opportunities. And, we want safe and beautiful neighborhoods where we can enjoy our homes,” said York.

York said her campaign will focus on quality of life issues, good government and the economy.
