A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge on Tuesday extended the preliminary hearing for a man accused of starting a fire at a Pasadena boarding home that killed two other men.

Judge Elaine Lu postponed Garth Allen Robbins’ hearing to either June 24 or Aug. 5, depending on the prosecutor’s workload, the Pasadena Star-News reported.

The prosecutor was expected to notify the court on Wednesday about her schedule, the Star-News reported.

Robbins, 50, was arrested on Nov. 1 and charged with starting a fire at 1385 El Sereno Ave. that killed Cliff Juan Clarkm 56, and Paul Boyd. Robbins is being held without bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles.

His attorney, Rayford Fountain, asked for more time so that he could go over the 19 felony counts his client could be possibly tried on, the Star-News reported.

The counts are: two counts of special circumstance murder, one count of arson causing great bodily injury, 15 counts of attempted murder and one count of arson of an inhabited structure.

“The question is these attempted murder counts,” Fountain told the Star-News. “If a person starts a fire and there are all these people in the house, does he really intend to kill everybody in the house?”

“The arson-related murders is a whole different legal issue,” he said “Even if you were to accidentally kill somebody after you set fire to a house, the law still holds you liable. That’s not true with attempted murder situations.”
