Here’s How You Can be Ready For an Earthquake

Some Pasadenans were awakened by a 4.2 earthquake centered near Malibu early Wednesday morning.

The quake struck at 2 a.m., followed by a magnitude-3.6 aftershock at 2:03 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Two more aftershocks were reported. The first was 2.9-magnitude at 2:22 a.m. and the second was 2.8-magnitude at 2:38 a.m.

The quakes were centered offshore, about 10 miles south of Malibu and 15 miles southwest of Santa Monica, according to the USGS.

The 4.2-magnitude quake was about 9 miles deep. It was centered 15.4 miles west of Venice and 16.3 miles west of El Segundo.

Although the quake was not a local shaker, local residents still should be prepared for a major earthquake, which some experts will happen at some point.

Late last year, Pasadena Now reached out to Fire Chief Chad Augustin to discuss earthquake preparedness.

Before an earthquake

According to Augustin, prior to an earthquake local residents should have a go-bag.

The go-bag should have essentials for 24-72 hours.  Examples of items include: water, food, medication, prescription medications, whistle, flashlight with extra batteries, dust mask, gloves, water purification tablets, and cash.

Austin also said local residents should practice “drop, cover, and hold” in advance of an earthquake.

“Right where you are, drop onto your hands and knees.  Cover your head and neck with one arm, while crawling under a sturdy shelter (table, desk, etc.) Hold onto the shelter with one arm, while protecting your head and neck with your other,” he said.

During an earthquake

If you are in your car when an earthquake occurs, pull over and set your parking brake.

If you are outside, stay clear of buildings that could collapse and cause injury.

If inside, drop, cover and hold.

After an earthquake

Make sure you put on shoes with socks before exiting your bed.  This is important to prevent injury from broken glass, debris etc.

If your home is severely damaged, exit your home and do not re-enter.  Stay clear of buildings that appear damaged and could collapse.

Expect additional aftershocks and treat it like an earthquake.

If injured, call 911 for assistance as soon as possible.  Be prepared for delays in emergency assistance arriving.

If available, tune in to a radio, TV, or cell phone for additional information and further direction.
