An historic bungalow built in 1915 in the 1100 block of North Mar Vista Ave. was damaged by an attic fire  which caused almost $300,000 in damages on Monday night shortly after 7:30 p.m., the Pasadena Fire dept. reports.

The fire was discovered by a neighbor who  warned the occupants to flee  to safety.

The bungalow was designed by John C. Austin, a prominent architect and civic leader who participated in the design of several landmark buildings in Southern California, including the Griffith Observatory, Los Angeles City Hall, and the Shrine Auditorium.

Investigators say the fire was caused from roofers making repairs earlier in the day.  The home owners were offered but declined  temporary shelter.
