Hot, Dry Fire-Dangerous Weather Ahead This Week

The Pasadena Fire Dept. is considering increasing staffing as predictions mount for very high fire danger coming this week to the San Gabriel Valley, a spokesperson said Tuesday morning.

“Critical fire weather conditions are expected as moderate Santa Ana winds combine with very low relative humidity Thursday evening through Saturday evening and a fire weather watch is in effect,” the National Weather Service said in a statement.

“The potential for a local Red Flag warning is still pending and contingent upon the Weather Service,” said Fire Dept. spokesperson Lisa Derderian this morning. “We will monitor conditions and determine by Wednesday if we increase staffing.”

The National Weather Service said the Santa Anita winds are expected to peak Friday midday and will persist, but will weaken from Friday afternoon through Saturday. Temperature will range from 5 to 10 degrees above normal.

A very low relative humidity is also expected for Los Angeles County. By Friday morning, relatively humidity is expected to fall sharply into the mid teens and will drop to a single digit by Saturday.

The wind is expected to move 20 to 30 mph northeast with gusts up to 50 mph in the favored ridges and canyons and 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph elsewhere.

The weather bureau warned that “if fire ignition occurs, there could be rapid spread of wildlife that would lead to a threat of life and property.”

Derderian reminds the public to be vigilant and not to use power tools for landscaping that could produce sparks.

“Don’t leave dog bowls outside that could produce excessive heat and radiate onto brush, and remember to take care yourself: hydrate before you’re thirsty, exercise in the early morning hours, keep pets in shade or where it’s cool and look out for elderly who may use a fan as a false sense of relief when in fact it mostly moves hot air around if not used properly,” she said.
