Huntington Health Welcomes New Pet Therapy Teams

Huntington Health in Pasadena has expanded its Pet-Assisted Therapy (PAT) program with the addition of three new volunteer teams, the hospital announced on its Facebook page this week.

“We have some new furry friends (and their owners) at Huntington! Please welcome our newest pet-assisted therapy teams – Maebh & Nancie, Ollie & Laurie and Rumi & Lisa.”

The hospital expressed gratitude for the “incredible donor and volunteer support” of the PAT program, which has been a presence at Huntington since 1984. In 1987, the program expanded to include over 33 volunteer teams working with their own dogs.

As part of the PAT program, pet therapy animals, primarily dogs, visit patients throughout the hospital to provide comfort and companionship. These specially trained volunteers and their dogs are available to visit patients in all units except maternity, with physician approval, seven days a week.

Huntington Health officials say the animals offer more than just a friendly face. They provide sensory stimulation, exercise through petting, and help patients shift focus from discomfort to pleasure.

For many patients, shaking a furry paw or stroking a floppy ear can be the best medicine. The dogs aim to brighten the day for patients, visitors, and staff alike.

In May 2020, during the height of COVID-19 precautions when the program had to be suspended, the hospital found an innovative way to continue the program’s spirit. Volunteers drove their dogs to the hospital for a “canine cavalcade” to honor employees and caregivers during Hospital Week.

The event showcased the adaptability of the PAT program during challenging times. As the hospital noted then, “Although we couldn’t stroke their fluffy ears, just the sight of them was ‘paws-itively’ uplifting during this challenging time.”

With the addition of the new teams, Huntington Health reaffirms its commitment to the therapeutic benefits of animal companionship in healthcare settings.

The PAT program is part of Huntington Health’s Non-Clinical Supportive Care Services. Those seeking more information about the program can call (626) 397-5208.
