Harabedian Drops Senate Campaign to Run For Assembly

The shocking development of political musical chairs continued on Friday as another local candidate changed races throwing the political landscape into disarray.

State Senate Candidate John Harabedian will move to the 41st District Assembly race.

The announcement comes on the heels of Vice Mayor Felicia Williams’s exit from that same assembly race and entrance into the campaign to retain her District 2 council seat.

“Our foothill communities need strong voices in the legislature—advocates who can deliver real results that protect our environment, build affordable housing, and support our public schools,” said Harabedian. “I am running for State Assembly because I want to be an effective voice for working families, for seniors, and for every person who lives and works in our communities. I was born and raised in the 41st Assembly District; it’s where I served as a City Councilmember and Mayor, and where my wife and I chose to make our home. I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. After talking to friends, neighbors, and supporters, I believe that I can make the largest difference by fighting for our communities in the State Assembly. I look forward to the campaign ahead.”

Harabedian announced that he had received Williams’ endorsement.

“John Harabedian has the experience and qualifications that we need in Sacramento,” Williams said in a statement released by Harabedian. “As a former local mayor and councilmember and a state commissioner, John also has a track record of bringing people together to deliver results. I look forward to working with John in the State Assembly to bring more resources to Pasadena and the Foothill communities!”

Harabedian joins the race as the fundraising frontrunner, with a campaign war chest of over $500,000.

Former Police Lt. Phlunté Riddle has raised $253,034 and Jed Leano has raised just more than $150,000.

The move pits Williams against former councilmember and Rick Cole.

Cole announced on Friday that he had knocked on 1,000 doors in the District 2 so far.

“Last weekend, I knocked on my 1000th door in District Two,” Cole said. “People really respond to a candidate coming to their door, especially on these hot summer days! I’m emphasizing that we’re running a positive, grass roots, issue-oriented campaign and that we aim to revive the spirit of government “by the people.”

Had Williams stayed in that race, a new District 2 councilmember was guaranteed. Williams would have been forced to relinquish her seat to run for the assembly.

Cole has promised to continue a positive campaign.
