A City official called on local residents to remain vigilant as one of the most dangerous heat waves in years continues to scorch the region.
The heat wave is expected to reach 99 degrees on Wednesday and climb as high as 106 degrees on Thursday and remain above 100 degrees until Tuesday.
“During this extreme heat it’s vital everyone looks out for their neighbors who may have pre-existing medical conditions, no air conditioning or other issues. Never hesitate calling 911 if there are any doubts on someone’s well-being because a minor health related issue can quickly escalate if not treated promptly. Additionally, leave bottled water for your mail carrier, delivery person, police/fire or maintenance personnel, etc. because these small gestures go a long way. With school-age kids make sure they exercise indoors or earlier in the day and we can’t forget our furry friends who need extra water and shade.
The City has a designated cooling center open in addition to libraries and recreation centers.
The Jackie Robinson Community Center is the designated cooling center. It is located at 1020 North Fair Oaks Avenue.
The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for Los Angeles County and surrounding regions, in effect through 8 p.m. Friday.
Nearby areas could reach highs above 110 degrees.
The South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) has cautioned residents that elevated ozone levels could lead to poor air quality.
The result could impact the San Gabriel Valley, the Santa Clarita Valley, and San Bernardino Valley.
“The Air Quality Index (AQI) is predicted to reach Unhealthy or higher in several regions, which could pose serious health risks, especially for sensitive groups like children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions,” the AQMD said in a bulletin. “We advise residents to check air quality levels regularly and limit outdoor activities as necessary.”
