District 3 Incumbent Justin Jones has once again qualified for the District 3 seat.

According to the City’s Clerk’s website, Jones turned in the required signatures and paid the $25 fee on March 21.

Luz Marina Miranda has also pulled papers.

According to the City Clerk’s website, she has not submitted her petitions for verification.

Local residents living in the district have until Thursday to submit applications.

The City Council is expected to discuss the appointment process at an upcoming meeting and will for the second time in less than 90 days appoint a District 3 Council member sometime after June 12 when the new council is seated.

Five affirmative votes are required to appoint an individual to the City Council. If the City Council is unable to appoint a candidate, the District 3 Council member would be chosen by lot if more than one person qualifies.

The applicant who is chosen will serve the remainder of the current term until 2024.

Two vacancies were left by the death for City Councilmember John Kennedy.

In December, the City Council filled the vacancy covering Kennedy’s current term, which ends on December 12. The second vacancy begins December 12, the beginning of the term was elected when he won the June 7th Primary Election.

The term for the second vacancy will last until December 9, 2024 when the voters in the district decide their representative.
