JPL Scientists Invent Necklace to Help Combat COVID-19, Give Away Blueprints

A team of three Jet Propulsion Laboratory scientists has invented a 3D-printed necklace that vibrates to alert wearers when their hands near their faces to help stem the spread of COVID-19, and they gave away the plans for it on Thursday.

PULSE is meant to provide a gentle nudge, “reminding the wearer to avoid touching these entryways in order to reduce potential infection,” JPL said in a written statement. And the device is affordable and simple for anyone to build, “regardless of their level of expertise.”

“This concept is a response to how often hand-face contact occurs throughout the day, a subconscious behavior that can be overlooked and challenging to correct, according to a brochure accompanying the plans.

“Developing the PULSE prototype is important given that stay at home measures are being lifted and people are returning to the workplace. During this transition, health officials have advised that we continue washing our hands, social distancing, and wearing a face mask when going outside,” the brochure stated.

The components consist of a 3D-printed case, an infrared proximity sensor, a coin vibration monitor, a tactile slide switch and a 3V battery and holder.
