Kings Row: Honky Tonk by Day, Pub by Night

Down home country music accompanied our hearty brunch at this gastropub in Old Pasadena

Co-owners Hagop Giragossian and Shivie Dhillon

With a name like Kings Row one would expect to be served tea and scones, not biscuits and gravy or chicken and waffles but as co-owner Shivie Dhillon pointed out Brunch does cover breakfast and lunch so it needs to be rib-sticking.

We started our brunch with white sangria for me and a mimosa for my companion because brunch is just not brunch without the fire water. The sangria was light and crisp, not too sweet-just refreshing. The mimosa was made with fresh orange juice and was just the right combination of sweet and bubbly.

Queso Fundido and White Sangria

In addition to biscuits and gravy and chicken and waffles the menu offers entrees like chicken fried steak, omelettes with your choice of fillings and griddle cakes with interesting toppings. They’ve also thrown in a couple of English faves like fish n’ chips and English fry up complete with baked beans!

I ordered the queso fundido made with chorizo, potatoes, poblano peppers and plenty of cheese, all topped with a fried egg and served with corn tortillas. I scooped up some of the cheese mixture and folded it into my corn tortilla. It was love at first bite with oozing cheese and spicy chorizo blending together in all their artery-clogging goodness.

Pullman French Toast and Mimosa

My companion ordered the Pullman French toast. Tender pieces of brioche were topped with corn flakes and cinnamon and allowed to caramelize. It was accompanied by scrambled eggs, fresh berries, potatoes, mascarpone and plenty of maple syrup. Of course I had to try this as well and it was very tasty indeed. The corn flakes really add a nice crunch and there was plenty of cinnamon (I like cinnamon).

Fried Chicken and Waffles

The restaurant has a great outdoor patio if the weather is nice and you want to dine al fresco. The interior space is a fun mixture of wood and brick. For those of you familiar with Neomeze you’ll never recognize it. Kings Row is a completely new restaurant with a new menu and chef. A little bit country, a little bit jazzy, touches of England and a whole lot of fun.
