L.A. County Sheriff’s Dept. May Cut 1,000 Deputies After Expected Budget Cut: Report

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reportedly may slash up to 1,000 deputies’ in response to an expected $200 million cut to the agency’s budget expected to be enacted by county officials on Monday, a sheriff’s official said.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is preparing to submit a finalized budget for the upcoming fiscal year that will fund the sheriff’s department with about $3.3 billion, which is $200 million below last year’s funding level and $600 million less than the $3.9 billion budget Sheriff Alex Villanueva has requested.

The expected budget cut could cost more than 1,000 deputy positions, along with hundreds of civilian jobs in the department, sheriff’s Administration Services Director Conrad Meredith told the Los Angeles Daily News.

Deputies were not expected to be fired, although hundreds of unfilled positions would remain unfilled, and more would be left vacant following future retirements, he said.

“(Villanueva) is looking at curtailments or reductions in patrol, he’s looking at reductions in custody positions – that could mean closing some floors in the jails,” Meredith told the Daily News. “He’s looking at scaling back some operations in court services.”

Earlier this year, Villanueva said he would close the Altadena Sheriff’s Station, but seemed to back off after the announcement sparked outrage in that community. It is not known if the closure is completely off the table.

The department employs 9,791 deputies.
