L.A. Metro Seeks Public Feedback On Eliminating Fares

Los Angeles transportation authorities are seeking input from the public into the feasibility of eliminating fares on city buses and trains, officials said Tuesday.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has developed a pilot program to give free rides to low-income riders and K-12 students starting in January 2022. The MTA’s Fareless System Initiative study has scheduled five local service-council meetings in March to gather public feedback on that program.

The agency’s service councils advise on planning and implementation of Metro services in five geographic regions, but the presentation will be the same at each meeting and members of the public can attend and ask questions regardless of where they live, officials said.

The meetings will be held virtually, at the following times:

Wednesday: San Fernando Valley Service Council, 6:30 p.m.

• Monday: San Gabriel Valley Service Council, 5 p.m.
• March 10: Westside/Central Service Council, 6 p.m.
• March 11: Gateway Cities Service Council, 2 p.m.
• March 12: South Bay Service Council, 9:30 p.m.
