[UPDATED] Health officials in Los Angeles County announced the largest-ever single-day increase in new detected infections on Tuesday, blaming the spike, in part, on a backlog of test results.

The L.A. County Department of Public Health reported 4,015 newly-detected COVID-19 infections and 46 new deaths. That brings total infections reported in the county to 120,539 – or about 43 percent of the state’s 277,774 cases. In all, 3,579 people have succumbed to the novel coronavirus in the county, making up 59 percent of all COVID-19 deaths reported in California.

New infections reported in L.A. County accounted for 66 percent of the newly detected COVID-19 cases in the state and 41 percent of the new deaths reported throughout California on Tuesday. State officials reported 111 new fatalities, bringing the statewide death toll to 6,448.

“The high number of cases are, in part, due to a backlog of about 2,000 test results received from one lab who just submitted lab results from July 2 through July 5 today,” according to a statement from the L.A. County Department of Public Health.

The positivity rate in the county also continues to climb drastically.

The total rate of people testing positive, compared with total tests administered, has reached 9 percent, officials said. But over the past week, that rate jumped to 11.6 percent.

The positivity rate and hospitation rate at the state level both remained on an upward trajectory looking back at the past two weeks, according to the California Department of Public Health.

More than 1,950 people COVID-19 patients were being treated at hospitals, county health officials said. About 27 percent of them were being treated in intensive care units, and 18 percent were on ventilators.

“The number of daily hospitalizations has steadily increased to over 1,900 since July,” the county statement said.

Pasadena health officials reported seven new infections and no new deaths on Tuesday. The city’s totals stand at 1,415 known COVID-19 cases and 97 deaths.

Sixty-four people were being treated at Huntington Hospital in Pasadena, as of Wednesday morning data shows.

L.A. County Director of Public Health reiterated that residents are not merely bystanders to the pandemic, but hold the solution to ending it.

“Every single person we have lost to COVID-19 was someone’s parent, sibling, friend and neighbor,” she said. “Our actions have consequences and they affect real people in our community.”

“Choosing to not practice physical distancing or objecting to wearing cloth face coverings when around others can be a life-altering decision. Everyone shares the collective responsibility to slow the spread of COVID-19 to prevent an overwhelming surge of COVID-19 to save lives,” according to Ferrer.

More information, including a city-by-city listing of detected infections, can be viewed on the L.A. County Department of Public Health website.
