Police arrested two Las Vegas men who they say attacked two teenagers and robbed one of them in Pasadena on Tuesday afternoon.

The crime took place about 1:30 p.m. in the 900 block of Summit Avenue, Pasadena police Lt. Maria Taglioretti said.

A 17-year-old boy and 17-year-old girl were in front of a home when a car approached with two men inside, she said.

The driver asked the victim where he was from — a common gang challenge, officials said. The young man responded that he was not in a gang.

The suspects got out of their car and attacked the young man as he stood between them and the young woman, the lieutenant said.

As a fight ensued, Taglioretti said the young woman pulled out a cell phone and called the police.

One of the two suspects punched the woman in the face and forced the phone from her hand, she said.

As the male victim held one of his attackers, the other demanded the victim release his accomplice, threatening to shoot both victims, according to Taglioretti.

Both suspects then got back into their car and sped off.

Officers quickly managed to track down the just-stolen cell phone nearby, leading them to a car matching the description of the one used by the robbers, the lieutenant said. The two suspects were soon spotted in the area and taken into custody.

One of them, identified as Xavier Bankston, 23, of Las Vegas, was found to have a loaded revolver in his pocket, she said.

He and Michael Hain, 20, of Las Las Vegas, were booked on suspicion of robbery, assault and making criminal threats, Taglioretti said. Bankston was additionally accused of illegal gun possession.

The male victim declined medical treatment, and the female victim declined an ambulance and sought treatment on her own, officials said.

According to Los Angeles County booking records, bail for Bankston and Hain was set at $50,000 each pending their initial appearances in Los Angeles County Superior Court.
