La Canada Presbyterian Presents “Screenagers: Growing Up in the Digital Age”

La Canada Presbyterian Church announced today that it will host a film-screening of the documentary “Screenagers,” followed by a 4-week class to explore the impact of technology on child development.

There are two screening dates to choose from: Sunday, October 9, at 5:00 p.m. or Tuesday, October 11, at 7:00 p.m. Both screenings take place in the Worship Arts Center of the La Canada Presbyterian Church. To purchase tickets, go to lcpc.events.screenagers.

More than any other time in history, technology is an ever-present part of our children’s experience of the world. But what impact do social medial, smart phones, video games and computers have on their development?

Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that with her own kids and learned that the average kid spends 6.5 hours a day looking at screens. She wondered about the impact of all this time and about the friction occurring in homes and schools around negotiating screen time—friction she knew all too well.

In Screenagers, as with her award-winning documentaries on mental health, Delaney takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance.

As Annie Bierling, Director of LPCC Parent Ed Director, expresses her hopes about the screening, “Six years ago when we sponsored “The Race to Nowhere,” thoughtful discussion and pro-active measures ensued. Our hope is that the viewing of “Screenagers” will have the same impact on the community–as we come together to manage both the gifts and challenges of technology in meaningful ways.”

This screening is part of LCPC’s wider efforts to give parents the resources, community, and practical tools they need to build healthy families. To that end, LCPC will also offer a 4-week course to explore the impact of technology on youth and offer practical tools to help youth and parents find balance.

As Heather Henry, LCPC’s Children’s Director, says, “Parenting is hard and one of the unique challenges we face today is the pervasiveness of our ever-changing digital technology. The conversation that will undoubtedly result after watching Screenagers will be full of excellent tools if you have found yourself wondering how to manage your child’s use of technology. My hope is that we can come together as parents/guardians, sharing our struggles, concerns and successes in figuring out healthy and achievable solutions to this issue.”

This 4-week course, free to the public and including child care, is designed for parents of children 0-18 to discuss practical ways to manage technology. Participants have the option of attending the class Sunday mornings from 9:30-11:00 a.m. (Oct 16 ,23, 30 and Nov 6) or Wednesday nights from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. (Oct 19, 26, Nov 2 & 9). The cost is $50/family which includes child care and a copy of the new book Right Click from Kara Powell. To register for the 4-week course, go to www.lacanadapc.org/screenagers.
