League of Women Voters – Pasadena Area Hosts UCLA Law Professor Discussing Police Accountability on Thursday

UCLA Law Professor Joanna Schwartz is set to join The League of Women Voters – Pasadena Area for a Thursday webinar discussing research that shows how the Supreme Court and local governments have rolled back civil protections to shield police from accountability.

Professor Schwartz, who teaches courses on civil procedure, police accountability, and public interest law, will answer questions raised by her new book, Shielded: How the Police Became Untouchable, and discuss solutions to the problem.

The League of Women’s Voters – Pasadena said that Professor Schwartz will shed light on how justice and restitution for victims of police violence are denied and how civil rights protections for civilians can be restored.

“Professor Schwartz explores both state and federal reforms that show promise. Among the measures she will discuss are limiting pretextual traffic stops, which too often turn violent, and ending consensual stops and searches. Such reforms are among the most effective that states and municipalities can undertake to reduce abuses of our civil rights,” said Kris Ockershauser, Chair, the League of Women Voters Pasadena Policing Practices Subcommittee

The webinar will also feature a question-and-answer session with Schwartz.
