LIVE BLOGGING WITH EDDIE RIVERA | San Diego Tramples the Dodgers, 7-1, in First Game of Weekend Series

Published on Friday, September 2, 2022 | 10:58 pm

Dodger pitcher Dustin May’s road back just got longer, as pitcher Yu Darvish and the San Diego Padres stomped the Dodgers 7-1, at Dodger Stadium Friday night.

May tossed 87 pitches and gave up six earned runs, walked five, hit two batters, two home runs, along with five strikeouts. Darvish, meanwhile, was masterful throughout the game, showing off the promise that the Dodgers saw with him in 2019.

San Diego broke the game open in the third inning when former Dodger and now nemesis Manny Machado homered deep in to the left field bleachers, giving Soto a ride home and silencing the stadium .

Brandon Drury soon followed with a two-run ride of his own, providing the Padres with three more runs than they would eventually need.

Dodger reliever Heath Hembree was having a storybook sixth inning, meanwhile retiring two successive batters on seven pitches when Jurickson Profar sent a fast ball rocketing into the stands, and scoring three.

The Dodgers made a little noise in the bottom of the ninth, when Turner doubled and was brought home with a single from Gallo. It was only a little noise.

The game was the first in a six- game homestand with the first of three games against San Diego. Following the weekend set, the Dodgers will take on the Giants next week from Monday, Sept. 5 through Wednesday, Sept. 7.

Here’s how we blogged it:

First pitch 7:10 p.m. 85 degrees.

Joey Gallo (no relation) robs Jurickson Profar of something dangerous happening deep in left field.

Juan Soto (not the world-class flauta) is at 2-1. I meant 3-1. He gets to first on a pitch mishandled by Will Smith.

Boobirds greet former Dodger, now bugaboo, Manny Machado. He is at 2-1. 3-1, as May struggles with the strike zone, per se.
Machado be walking.

Josh Bell. all designated and whatnot, flies out to Max “Don’t call me Steve” Muncy.

Jake Cronenworth looks at a strike. 1-1. May strikes him all the way out.

Padres 0, Dodgers coming up.

Mookie (no relation) Betts flies out to short center field and not in a good way.

Freddie Freeman is at 2-2. He flies out, out there somewhere.

Will Smith be at 1-2. 2-2. Down he goes.

Dodgers 0, Padres 0.

Brandon Drury is gunned down at first, in a play that looked closer than it was.

Trent Grisham gazes longingly at a strike. 1-1. 1-2. And he gets totally walked.

Ha Song Kim is at 1-0, as Grisham does the “watch me!” dance. Kim grounds out to first. Grisham boogaloos to second.

Austin Nola is totally tossed out at first.

Dodgers 0, Padres 0.

Muncy be designated, kinda like being validated. 0-1. 0-2. He goes to first on a wack throw by second baseman Jake Cronenworth, who mutters the “F” word.

Justin Turner is so out.

Joey Gallo is at 3-1. 3-2. He flies out to center. No one moves. No one gets hurt.

Chris Taylor is now at 3-1. He walks not unlike an Egyptian to first.

Cody Bellinger is at 0-2. Not in a good way. He swings in slow motion.

Dodgers 0, Padres 0.

Profar is so out of there.

Soto walks and gives May a little bit of mad dog, which brings up Machado.

Smith (no relation) flies out easily to center.

Muncy is done.

Justin Turner is at 1-2. He doubles to deep right.

Bellinger is done.

Hanser Alberto is also quite done.

May stays in the game.

Drury is hit by May, a glancing blow off the front of his helmet. Clearly dazed, he heads for first base.

Profar mows the air.

Padres 7, Dodgers 0.

Dodgers go down in a whisper in the bottom of the eighth.

Padres 7, Dodgers 0.

Hanser Alberto is pitching for the Dodgers. He is pitching about as fast as a really strong eighth grader. No real windup, no rearing back, it’s just throwing the ball towards home plate.
