Local Activist Marty Coleman Has Died

Marty Coleman, former All Saints Outreach Director for the Inter-Faith Center, died on Tuesday.

She was 92.

She joined All Saints Church in 1982 and has held various roles, including leadership of the first-ever All Saints Peace and Justice Office.

Coleman founded the Conscientious Projector project, which used documentary film to stir discussions about issues, and Sustainable World, a program focused on socially responsible economics and fair wage advocacy.

Coleman’s path to the advocacy world took a big leap forward when she was asked to speak at her church about nuclear weapons. Coleman was horrified when she realized she knew little of what was going on in the world.

With other activists, she traveled to the Soviet Union, and spoke to Russian leader Mikhail Gorbachev.

Coleman was also a prominent figure in the world of interfaith dialogue.

In 2017, she was named Grand Marshal of the Doo Dah Parade.

At that time, Coleman said she wanted to live to be 105 years old because she had so much work to do in this era of unusual crises in politics. According to Coleman, the situation called for people to respond with resilience and passion in our community.”

Mayor Victor Gordo will ask that Monday’s City Council meeting adjourn in Coleman’s honor.

Pasadena Now joins the community in mourning the loss of Marty Coleman.
