Local Groups Rally Against Asian Hate

Community organizations held a rally calling for an end to  hate incidents targeting the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community throughout the nation.

The “Stop Asian Hate” was sponsored by My Tribe Rise, the Altadena Town Council, the Compassionate Support Team, SURJ-Altadena and Dena United.

About 75 local participants marched from Loma Alta Park to Charles White Park as part of the rally which included prayers for unity and peace.

“We experienced the fulfillment of ‘community in unity’!” My Tribe Rise Director of Operations Heavenly Hughes wrote after the event.

“It was invigorating and empowering to stand alongside our Asian neighbors, Asian friends, and Asian community leaders having dialogue on how we can do more to support each other. We must see each other, hear each other, and connect with compassion and empathy,” Hughes wrote.

“We may look different but we all are one community. We must renew our minds and create a new lens of respect for humanity! What we’ve been doing in America has not been working.”

According to reports, attacks on the Asian community nationwide have been increasing since pandemic began. Officials blame rhetoric connecting COVID-19 to the Asian community for some of the attacks.

“We need you to hear us,” said Pastor Steve Wong at the rally. “That’s what it means for us getting stronger together.  That means that if somebody is getting hurt, I’m with you… even if it costs me something.”
