A man attacked police with a tree branch and smashed out two windows of a patrol car before officers managed to subdue him on Monday night, officials said.

Michael Mijares, 53, of Pasadena was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and vandalism following the bizarre rampage, which unfolded about 8:20 p.m. in the 100 block of North Sierra Madre Boulevard, according to Pasadena police Lt. Pete Hettema.

The suspect was gone when officers arrived, but soon returned, prompting a second response from police, Hettema said. A witness additionally reported seeing Mijares smashing out the window of a car at a gas station with an unknown object.

Officers found Mijares, who had armed himself with a large tree branch, which he was wielding like a baseball bat, Hettema said.

As an officer approached from behind, Mijares turned and charged toward him with the branch, the lieutenant said. The officer fired a Taser, but Mijares pulled the darts from his chest. Both officers then deployed Tasers a second time, with no effect.

Mijares then ran to a police car and smashed out two windows with the branch, Hettema said. As he reached into the patrol car, an officer fired another Taser round, but Mijares showed no reaction.

The suspect ran away and vandalized another vehicle, Hettema said. He then armed himself with a metal object resembling a piece of a door frame.

Another Taser deployment caused Mijares to drop the object, and officers were able to take him into custody, the lieutenant said. Two officers suffered minor injuries during the struggle.

Officers said they suspected Mijares may have been under the influence of drugs.

He was taken to a hospital for examination prior to booking, Hettema said.
