A man found suffering from injuries including broken ribs and a collapsed lung near the Jackie Robinson Community Center in Pasadena on Friday morning told authorities he had been attacked with a baseball bat in a robbery attempt the night before, officials said.

An employee of the center first noticed the injured man asleep about 9:30 a.m. near the facility at 1020 N. Fair Oaks Ave., Pasadena police Lt. Anthony Russo said. He was estimated to be in his 60s and described as transient.

The attack was believed to have taken place in the 400 block of North Los Robles Avenue, Russo said.

The victim relayed that he had been attacked the night before, according to the lieutenant. Another man had demanded his wallet and watch, but attacked him with a baseball bat before he had a chance to respond.

The victim was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries including several broken ribs and a collapsed lung, officials said.

Further details regarding the incident, including a suspect description, were not available Saturday.
