National PTA has awarded Marshall Fundamental PTSA a $1,000 grant to foster digital safety conversations in their school community using The Smart Talk. The grant is made possible by PTA Proud National Sponsors NortonLifeLock & TikTok. The Smart Talk is a free, fun, interactive tool created by National PTA and NortonLifeLock that helps families set tech ground rules together. Using guided questions, the easy-to-use tool addresses privacy, screen time, social media etiquette, app usage, texting and calling to create a customized agreement that families can print and sign.

“Offerings like The Smart Talk are part of our association’s long-standing efforts to support the health, safety, well-being and long-term success of every child through family and community education,” said Leslie Boggs, president of National PTA. “Our mission is more important than ever as the COVID-19 pandemic continues. We are pleased to provide Marshall Fundamental PTSA with resources to empower their work.”

With the grant, Marshall Fundamental PTSA will invite the entire school community to participate the Smart Talk program. By offering this program, the PTSA seeks to provide a free and fun resource to families to improve the mental and emotional health for their children and themselves. The PTSA will incentive participation by offering prizes to everyone who completes the program.

“Families and especially children are connected to the digital world more than ever, especially because of the increased time spent at home during the pandemic,” said David Way, treasurer of Marshall Fundamental PTSA. “Unfortunately, many parents and children are unaware of the risks and dangers or they have underestimated the potential negative impacts. This grant will help families protect their relationships by creating a space and forum to discuss the issues surrounding the digital world. It will help families develop healthy boundaries together and educate them on what is safe and what is not. These conversations can help improve mental health by giving children the support they need to cope with social media issues.”

The grant is part of National PTA’s PTA Connected initiative and the association’s new PTA Programs at Home models. National PTA launched its PTA Connected initiative in 2018 to formalize and build on its work in the digital space in response to the growing needs and interest of parents nationwide. PTA Connected is designed to educate and engage families in digital wellness, security, access, equity and literacy. To date, over $750,000 in funding has been awarded to PTAs to host PTA Connected events with over 500 PTA Connected events across the country, reaching over 25,000 families. NortonLifeLock is the presenting and founding sponsor of PTA Connected and collaborated with National PTA to build The Smart Talk tool.

In response to our changing world, National PTA developed at-home models as alternatives for in-person PTA Connected and Smart Talk Conversation community events. The PTA Programs at Home models offer engaging, educational and fun activities for all students and their families.

“National PTA developed its PTA Programs at Home models to provide all PTAs the opportunity to offer programming in new, exciting formats that increase accessibility for families—regardless of whether their school community is learning from home, in the school building or in a hybrid model,” added Nathan R. Monell, CAE, National PTA Executive Director. “National PTA and PTAs nationwide remain committed to supporting families and school communities, making sure they have what they need during this challenging time and helping all children realize their full potential.”
