Monday Morning Bullpen: Copy That

Published on Monday, September 19, 2022 | 5:00 am

No big items on Monday’s City Council agenda. Still, the City’s business has to be done.

The consent calendar always contains some interesting stuff, sometimes multiple items, that can be collectively passed under one vote.

I immediately stopped when I saw the contract for an item for the police department.

If you watch the meetings you know there are a group of locals that regularly call in and oppose any police item.

New SUVs, don’t do it, they say.

A mobile unit, nope can’t have it.

Automatic license plate readers. Absolutely not.

Shotspotter, well it doesn’t work.

Lunch – oh, hell no.

At one point locals opposed a contract for new body worn cameras that would automatically turn on when police unholster their guns.

Yeah, something that would provide more accountability.

So, of course they will be up in arms for the item on Monday’s consent calendar.

That’s what happens when you don’t read the staff report.

But on Monday, the contract is for new copy machines.

Now the city has really gone too far.

The other interesting item comes via the Hearing Officer. The folks over at A Noise Within want to amend their Conditional Use Permit so they can sell booze. This one shocked me because I assumed they were already selling drinks there.

Live entertainment and a drink or too.

Seems like an okay idea.

One of my favorites is the Board of Zoning Appeals. They have not met for a while. I guess everything is running smoothly on that end.

Hope I did not jinx it, guys.

Going back to last week’s meeting.

Some people are still calling on the City Council to open its doors to the public.

Makes sense.

Still, I would hazard a guess some of the disgruntled callers won’t attend the live meetings.

It’s one thing to call in unseen and cuss and scream.

But live, well then you have to drive to City Hall after a long day at work and wait for your name to be called and make your comments and still receive no response.

I had to attend meetings when I worked at that paper before I came to PNow. We were about a mile away from City Hall, and there was never a Monday when I wanted to attend after working all day.

Truth to tell, I didn’t attend most of them although they thought I did.

Also things will get interesting after SB 1100 goes into effect in January, which is right around the time I expect the public to be allowed to attend meetings again.

The bill would allow the mayor to have people removed for disrupting the meeting, after one warning.

The City Council wants to hear from residents in District 3 on Justin Jones, Brandon Lamar and Pastor Lucious Smith.

So do I.

Here’s an idea, let the D3 residents vote.

Appoint somebody, reappoint them in December and then in March, hold a special election so the City can hear from the residents in D3.

Wrapping things up, check out Justin Chapman’s interview with Miguel Márquez on Newsrap.

Glad another reporter in town decided a one-on-one with the new CM is newsworthy. Make no mistake about it, Justin is easily one of the top two reporters in town.

He covers local matters, asks the right questions and he can go get his own stories.

Good job Nightwing. I used to call him Boy Wonder, but now, well just Google it.

If you’re not watching the show, which was once hosted by the great Barry Gordon and yours truly, you’re missing out.

Another great show out of Pasadena Media, or the House of Falardeau as I call it.
