Football is scheduled to return to the Rose Bowl later this month when the John Muir High School Mustangs and the Pasadena High School Bulldogs take to the gridiron.

The teams will play home games in the Rose Bowl before they compete in the annual Turkey Tussle on April 16. Each team will play twice in the historic stadium before facing each other.

Under revised state health guidelines announced last week, outdoor sports and live performance venues can reopen on April 1, with capacity limits based on a county’s tier ranking.

The state is on the verge of moving from the purple, or the worst tier, into the red tier of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s blueprint for reopening. Under the red tier, spectators can fill 20% of the stadium’s capacity, which, at 92,542 allows 18,508 fans inside to watch the game.

On Saturday, Rose Bowl General Manager Darryl Dunn said that under new California Department of Public Health orders announced late last week the stadium will also host the return of the in-person Rose Bowl Flea Market on April 11.

Dunn also confirmed the Rose Bowl’s first scheduled major sporting event will be on Aug. 28, when the UCLA Bruins kick off their fall season against the University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors.

In their first game, the Pasadena High Bulldogs will play Burbank’s Burroughs High School Indians at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 25, followed by a game at 6:30 p.m. between the Muir Mustangs and the Crescenta Valley High School Falcons.

On April 1, Pasadena will face the Arcadia Apaches at 4 p.m.

Muir will return to the Rose Bowl at 4 p.m., April 9, against Burroughs High.

“We are pleased that the kids will be able to call the Rose Bowl home. Hopefully, it will be a great experience for them and their opponents, during a year that has been hard for all of us,” Dunn told Pasadena Now

“The new guidelines and tier protocols that were announced by the governor [were] very exciting as this may allow patrons to get back to attend events inside our beloved stadium,” Dunn said.

Councilmember Tyron Hampton worked with the city and the Rose Bowl to secure the stadium for the teams.

“This is another great example of how our city and our school district come together to solve the needs of our young people,” Hampton said. “As long as we continue to effectively communicate we will be able to do great things together for the future of our city, future being the young people.  After going a whole season without playing due to the times that we’re in. Our young people need to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Just imagine the confidence this gives to our student athletes to be able to play in the most iconic stadium in the world for home games. [Also have to give a] big thanks to the Rose Bowl GM Darryl Dunn, and City Manager Steve Mermell for understanding how important this is.”
