Municipal Services Committee Receives Update on Power Delivery Master Plan

Pasadena Water and Power (PWP) will provide an update on the Power Delivery Master Plan to the City Council’s Municipal Services Committee, which on Tuesday is holding a special meeting online starting at 4 p.m.

The Power Delivery Master Plan (PDMP) is a 20-year road map for maintaining and updating the electric distribution system in Pasadena.

Initiated in November 2019 with the participation of a Stakeholders Technical Advisory Group representing a cross-section of PWP customers, the PDMP will outline PWP’s projected future state and establish goals and a strategy to upgrade the utility’s aging electric system.

At a time when technology is evolving and operational needs are changing, the PDMP will also evaluate the current and future needs to keep the electric system safe, reliable, resilient and efficient, a memorandum by PWP General Manager Gurcharan Bawa said.

The plan is expected to be completed and presented to the Municipal Services Committee and eventually to the City Council for approval by July. After that, the PDMP is supposed to be updated every five years to keep it current with customers’ needs, technology and other influencing factors.

Later in January, the Stakeholders Technical Advisory Group is scheduled to meet for PWP to report on the PDMP’s progress and on preliminary resource requirements, as well as to solicit feedback from among the members.

A public meeting on the PDMP may be held in April or May, followed by a presentation to the Pasadena Environmental Advisory Commission in early June.

PWP serves approximately 67,000 customers in a service area that encompasses a total of 23 square miles in Pasadena and surrounding areas. About 87 percent of its customers are residential and 13 percent are commercial.
